It's a series of 8 or 9 books about a brotherhood of misfits and outcasts whose history is long and clouded in mystery. It is written from the perspective of the Company annalist and historian/surgeon. It has a colorfull cast of characters both good and evil. The two little guys in the front are the Company's most valuable assets, they're wizards, they are always feuding and getting even with each other especially at the most inopportune times, like in the middle of a battle. They are hilarious! 'Lady' [link] is a powerfull evil sorceress who rules a huge empire in the north and eventually loses her empire, falls in love with Croaker (company annalist) and becomes a member of the Black Company.

The comic relief is important in such a dark story...so nice that there weren't any good guys at all. When people ask me what the book is like all I can tell them is that's it's dark fantasy...all the elves are dead and the birds don't sing, this isn't your Mom's fantasy novel.
